HC Deb 13 March 1899 vol 68 c537
MR. S. SMITH (Flintshire)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether the Government have yet received the answer to the further dispatch stated to have been sent to the Government of Madras last year, on the subject of land revenue defaulters and the general administration of land revenue in that Presidency; and, if so, whether he is now prepared to lay upon the Table of the House the correspondence on the subject as promised in his answer last Session?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA

I am unable to trace, in the reports of the answers given by me last Session, any promise of the kind referred to in the honourable Member's Question, but I find that I offered to furnish the honourable Member with copies of the Madras Land Revenue Reports for 1894–5 and 1895–6, adding that I did not propose to lay them on the Table. I am now in a position to supply him with the Report for 1896–7, if he wishes it; but I do not see any sufficient reason for presenting papers on the subject.
