HC Deb 20 June 1899 vol 73 c61
MR. WOODS (Essex, Walthamstow)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in connection with the building of the new police barracks now in course of erection in the Keyham Yard, Plymouth, the wages are only being paid at the rate of 4s. per day, or 24s. per week; whether the work was tendered for by local contractors who were willing to pay the rate of wages current in the district, which is equal to 5s. 10d. per day; and whether the rates now being paid are consistent with the Fair Wages Resolution of February, 1891; and, if not, will he cause an inquiry into the circumstances of this case with a view of putting the matter right.

THE CIVIL LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN,) Worcestershire, E.

It is not clear what classes of workmen the question refers. The several kinds of workmen employed on the work are paid at the usual Dockyard rates.
