HC Deb 16 June 1899 vol 72 c1348
MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN

On behalf of the hon. Member for the St. Patrick Division of Dublin, I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether he has received a communication from the City of Liverpool and District Butchers' Association remonstrating against the appointment of a meat inspector who is not qualified according to the terms of the Local Government Board circular; and whether he will consider this appointment and communicate with the Corporation of Liverpool.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. CHAPLIN,) Lincolnshire, Sleaford

I have received a communication from the association referred to with regard to the appointment of a meat inspector at Liverpool and I have made inquiry on the subject. I am informed that the officer appointed holds a certificate of competency as a Sanitary Inspector of the Sanitary Institute, and that before making the appointment the Health Committee of the Liverpool City Council satisfied themselves that the officer possessed the necessary knowledge to discharge the duties of the office. It is added that the Medical Officer of Health and the Committee are convinced that his knowledge of the subject of meat inspection is amply sufficient to justify his acting as meat inspector.
