HC Deb 16 June 1899 vol 72 c1347
MR. TREVELYAN (York, W. R. Elland)

I beg to ask the Vice-President of the Committee of Council on Education whether his attention has been called to the fact that on Ascension Day the children and teachers of the National Schools at Berkhampstead were taken to a service in the parish church; whether the service was held during school hours; and, if so, whether the Department has the power to interfere to prevent the practice in future; and whether any attempt was made to obtain the consent of the parents of the scholars to their being taken from school to attend this service.

THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL ON EDUCATION (Sir J. GORST,) Cambridge University

The answer to the first question is in the negative. With regard to the attendunce of children at church services, I have nothing to add to my answer to a similar question on February 23rd.
