HC Deb 04 July 1899 vol 73 c1413
SIR JOHN BRUNNER (Cheshire, Northwich)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in the present negotiations with the South African Republic, Her Majesty's Government are acting in co-operation and consultation with the responsible Ministers of the Cape Colony.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

The Cape Government is not a party to the negotiations between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of the South African Republic, but the High Commissioner is in communication with the Cape Ministers.

MR. J. E. ELLIS (Nottingham, Rushcliffe)

Can the right hon. Gentleman assure us that the House will receive any representations that may be made by the Cape Government and sent to Her Majesty's Government by the High Commissioner?

Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN

I cannot give any promise. All I can say is that we have received no such communication.
