I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs wherher, during the late troubles in Crete, British protection was assured to the inhabitants of Candia who should surrender their arms; whether a large number of Cretan christians took up their resi- dence in Candia upon this assurance, complying with the condition specified; and whether many of these Cretans were wounded in the massacre of Candia, their houses burned, and their property destroyed; and, if so, what steps Her Majesty's Government have taken to obtain compensation for the injuries and losses they have sustained?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

So far as we are aware, no such assurance was given,' and no such surrender of arms by Christians took place before the massacre it Candia.
