HC Deb 20 February 1899 vol 66 c1440
MR. M'CARTAN (Down, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware of the importance to tenant farmers of getting early information of the date of the order fixing fair rent where the rules provide that notice of appeal must be served within two calendar months from the date of order; and whether, under the circumstances, he will consider the desirability of suggesting to the Land Commission the advisability of having the decisions and dates of the orders communicated to the solicitors for the parties?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY TO THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND (Mr. GERALD W. BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

The time within which parties must serve notice of appeal against orders made upon applications to fix fair rents under the Land Law Acts is limited to two months from the date of the order appealed against, but notifications of the decisions of the different Sub-Commissions, with the dates of the orders, issue, except in very exceptional cases, within four days from the date of the order in the case to the landlord or his agent, and to the tenant. In addition to these notifications, lists of the decisions are sent to be posted at the local Court House as soon as the decisions are pronounced, while solicitors who desire that the decisions in any special cases in which they are interested may be notified to them, can obtain such notification on furnishing the Deputy-Registrar of the Sub-Commission with a list of the particular cases in which such decisions are required. It is not the intention of the Commissioners to alter the existing practice.
