HC Deb 10 February 1899 vol 66 c515
MR. MANDEVILLE (Tipperary, South)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, how does the Local Government Board propose to compensate Miss Magill for their having (under erroneous views of the state of the law) removed her by sealed order from the office of poor rate collector to which she had been appointed by the Guardians of the Clogher Union, and which office was her means of earning her livelihood?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

In answer to this question, I would refer the honourable Member to the reply given by me yesterday to the question of my honourable Friend the Member for South Belfast. It is not the fact that the removal of Miss Magill from the office of poor rate collector was due to an erroneous view of the law on the part of the Local Government Board.

MR. W. JOHNSTON

Does the right honourable gentleman propose to compensate Miss Magill?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

Certainly not.
