HC Deb 09 February 1899 vol 66 c318
CAPTAIN DONELAN

I beg to ask the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether steps will be taken to substitute wholesome Irish butter for the foreign margarine which is at present supplied to the troops in Ireland?

DR. TANNER

I beg also to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if the attention of the Government has been directed to the alleged practice of supplying the troops in Ireland with foreign imported margarine in place of butter, as well as foreign meat, to the great and serious loss of the home producer?

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE WAR OFFICE (Mr. J. POWELL WILLIAMS,) Birmingham, South

In reply to this Question and to a similar Question put by the honourable Member for Mid Cork, I have to state that butter does not form part of the ration supplied to the soldier by the War Office. It is supplied by the canteen which is under the control of the local military authorities.
