HC Deb 18 April 1899 vol 69 cc1443-4
MR. WOODS (Essex, Walthamstow)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if he has received a petition, signed by nearly 600 bona fide workers, in compliance with the provisions of the Cheap Trains Act, 1883, from the postal and other employees resident in Lewisham and surrounding district, asking for a service of workmen's trains from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the South Eastern Railway; and, if he can say what course he intends taking in reference to the request made in the petition?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE

The Board of Trade are in communication with the company with reference to this petition, and are awaiting a reply. If the answer is unsatisfactory it will, of course, be open to the Department to use its powers under the Cheap Trains Act.
