HC Deb 16 May 1898 vol 57 c1367
MR. WILLIAM ABRAHAM (Cork Co., N.E.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he is aware that, at a petty session court held in Kildorrery on 6th April, the magistrates granted a decree for possession of a house and land held by Mrs. Margaret Murphy, with stay of execution for not less than 14 days, nor more than two months, but that, notwithstanding this decision, the agent for the landlord took possession on the 15th April, and demolished the house; and whether he will inquire into these allegations of illegal proceedings on the part of this magistrate?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY TO THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND (Mr. G. W. BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

The honourable Member appears to have been misinformed in this case. The decree granted on the 6th April authorised possession to be taken in not less than seven days nor more than a month. Mrs. Murphy was in occupation as a caretaker under the Land Act of 1887, though she had not resided in the house for more than a year previously to its demolition.
