HC Deb 12 May 1898 vol 57 c1079
GENERAL RUSSELL

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the lessons learnt from the naval battle at Manila, which demonstrated the helplessness of guns of an old type opposed to those of recent construction, the Government will seriously consider the necessity of providing the auxiliary forces organised for the defence of this country with efficient field artillery?

MR. BRODRICK

The information at our disposal with regard to the battle at Manila is not of a kind which enables us to draw conclusions applicable to the armament of the auxiliary forces of this country.
