HC Deb 02 May 1898 vol 57 c28
MR. W. JOHNSTON

On behalf of the honourable Member for North Fermanagh, I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, having regard to the great desire manifested in the counties in Ireland affected, he will take steps to have the evidence given before the recent Commission appointed to inquire into the administration of the loan fund societies in Ireland printed and circulated?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

On the 4th May last year I informed my honourable and learned Friend, in answer to a similar Question then put by him, that the transcript of the evidence taken at the various inquiries held by the Committee had not been printed. The evidence was very fully reported in the local newspapers, and in view of the elaborate character of the Report of the Committee already presented to Parliament, it was not considered necessary to lay the evidence on the Table of the House. I have no evidence before me to modify the opinion I expressed a year ago.
