STRAUSSI beg to ask the Secretary of State for India how much gold has been deposited at the Bank of England under the Act recently passed by the Indian Legislative Council, by which an order for the issue of currency notes can be telegraphed to India against deposits of gold at the Bank of England at an exchange rate of 1s. 4 5-32d. per rupee?
§ THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIAI stated yesterday, in reply to a similar Question, that no gold has been deposited in the Bank of England under the recent Act, but that there was reason to believe that the passing of the Act had the effect of improving the financial situation by making clear the elasticity of the resources of the Indian Government to meet demands which might arise for the transmission of gold to India.
