HC Deb 14 June 1898 vol 59 c218
MR. R. G. WEBSTER (St. Pancras, E)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is in a position to inform the House as to the negotiations with the Imperial Government of China in respect to the hinterland opposite Hong-kong in Kowloon and Mirs Bay?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. CURZON,) Lancashire, Southport

The negotiations which have for some time been proceeding with the Chinese Government for an extension of the boundaries of Hong-kong resulted in a Convention, which was signed on June 9th at Pekin. The area which is leased to Great Britain for 99 years includes the waters of Mirs Bay and Deep Bay, the peninsula and promontory of Kowloon, and the island of Lantau.
