HC Deb 29 July 1898 vol 63 c443
MR. ASCROFT (Oldham)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether, in view of the revelations made by Mr. Hooley in his examination before the Bankruptcy Court in regard to the large sums of money paid by him to noblemen and others for the promotion of joint-stock companies, he will consider the advisability of appointing a Select Committee next Session to inquire into the subject, with a view to early legislation for the protection, of investors?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I think my honourable Friend will probably agree with me that before attempting to draw any lessons from the legal proceedings to which he refers, we had better wait till such legal proceedings are terminated.
