HC Deb 04 August 1898 vol 64 cc86-7
MR. DUCKWORTH (Lancashire, Middleton)

On behalf of the honourable Member for Wick Burghs I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether the calves from which the lymph is to be derived, under the provisions of the Vaccination Bill, will be slaughtered after use, and the car cases exposed for sale in the meat markets?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (MR. CHAPLIN,) Lincolnshire, Sleaford

I have already stated more than once that every calf used for the preparation of glycerinated lymph will be subsequently slaughtered, and no lymph will be issued until both the car case and the internal organs have been inspected by the veterinary surgeon attached to the slaughtering establishment and have been reported to be in every respect healthy. In all countries in which calf lymph has been in use during the past quarter of a century such healthy car cases are exposed for sale, and I am not aware of anything at present that would make a different course necessary in this case.
