HC Deb 29 April 1898 vol 56 c1558
MR. J. C. FLYNN (Cork, N.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, consequent upon the issue of the Greek Indemnity Loan fixed for an early date in May, the evacuation of Thessaly by the Turkish troops will be completed within a month from that date, under Article III. of the Treaty of Peace; and, if so, whether the guaranteeing Powers will take advantage of the occasion to demand the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Crete and the appointment of a Christian Governor General in the island?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

The necessary arrangements are being made for the evacuation of Thessaly, in accordance with the provisions of Article III. of the Treaty of Peace. The question of the Turkish troops in Crete and the appointment of a Christian Governor General is unconnected with the fulfilment of the conditions of the Treaty of Peace, and is a matter for separate consideration.

MR. FLYNN

Can the right honourable Gentleman give any intimation as to when the evacuation of Crete by Turkish troops is likely to take place?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

No, Sir, I cannot.
