HC Deb 25 April 1898 vol 56 c963
SIR GEORGE S. BADEN-POWELL (Liverpool, Kirkdale)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any arrangements have been made, or will be made, as to the preservation of the present status and rights of Protestant missionaries in those portions of the Chinese Empire which may be leased to, or come under the control of, foreign Powers?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

There are not believed to be any Protestant missionaries in the portions of Chinese territory which have so far been leased to foreign Powers, and accordingly there has been no need for special arrangements on their behalf. The general rights and privileges enjoyed by foreign nations with regard to missionaries in China are defined by articles in the existing Treaties with that country.
