HC Deb 25 April 1898 vol 56 c950
MR. JAMES ROCHE (Kerry, E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, having regard to the increasing importance of the Yukon district of the North-West territory of Canada, and to the conflicting interests that now constantly arise therein with reference to the position of the disputed boundary between it and Alaska, the time has arrived when this matter should be referred to some form of arbitration that can finally define it?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

The question of referring the matter of the Alaska boundary to arbitration is under the consideration of the Government of the United States and Her Majesty's Government. I may add that there is good reason to believe that an agreement will shortly be concluded for a modus rivendi at the passes on the routes to the mining districts pending a final adjustment of the boundary line.
