HC Deb 31 May 1897 vol 49 c1631
MR. C. T. GILES (Cambridge, Wisbech)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether he is aware that imported wheat flour is largely adulterated with maize flour, an inferior and cheaper article; and, whether he can take any steps to prevent purchasers being thus prejudiced?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. HENRY CHAPLIN,) Lincolnshire, Sleaford

I have no information as to the extent to which imported wheat flour is mixed with maize flour, as it is not a matter in which I have any jurisdiction. If there is an offence under the Sale of Food and Drug Acts, proceedings can be taken under those Acts, but I have no authority under which I can take any steps as suggested in the Question.
