HC Deb 14 May 1897 vol 49 c498
MR. J. CARVELL WILLIAMS (Notts, Mansfield)

I beg to ask the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education whether he is aware that on a day in Holy Week, and during school hours, the children in the only public elementary school in Honiton were marched through the town to a Church of England service, some of them being the children of Nonconformists who have claimed for them the benefit of the Conscience Clause, and who were not aware of the intention to take the children to the service; and, whether the Department will take steps to prevent the compulsory attendance of children at religious services in places of worship?

SIR. J. GORST

The Committee of Council have no information on the subject, and have received no complaints.
