HC Deb 10 May 1897 vol 49 cc103-4
MR. HOGAN

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any official report of recent disturbances at Raiatea has reached the Foreign Office; what understanding has prevailed for some years past between the British and French Governments with respect to this island; and whether Raiatea is now practically a French possession?

MR. CURZON

Reports have been received from Her Majesty's Ambassador at Paris and Her Majesty's Consul at Tahiti of measures which have been taken by a French naval force against the natives of Raiatea. The French Government have a protectorate over Raiatea.
