HC Deb 10 May 1897 vol 49 c104
MR. HOGAN

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether the Colony of Victoria has offered to supply a recent requisition for 1,500 horses from his Department; and whether, when his choice is limited to colonial or foreign horses, he will in future give the preference to the former?

MR. BRODRICK

No requisition for 1,500 horses was made, a much smaller quantity being required. The Colony of Victoria offered to land 1,500 horses in South Africa, but at nearly double the price at which suitable horses could be obtained. Preference is always given to home and colonial stock when a suitable supply can be obtained at a reasonable price.

CAPTAIN DONELAN

asked whether preference would be given to Irish horses?

MR. BRODRICK

said the expense of taking horses from Ireland to South Africa made it prohibitive in this case.
