HC Deb 03 May 1897 vol 48 c1408
MR. J. W. CROMBIE (Kincardine)

I beg to ask the Lord Advocate whether, now that the Schedule of Mussel Beds has been laid upon the Table of the House, Her Majesty's Government have determined what steps they will take in the direction of legislation on this subject?

* THE LORD ADVOCATE

No district Fishery Committee has yet been constituted under the Act of 1895, and until localities interested in mussel cultivation form Committees the Fishery Board can only encourage such cultivation by undertaking it themselves or protecting private enterprise. With this view the Board are negotiating with the Board of Trade for a lease of the Clyde Mussel Beds, and Her Majesty's Government propose to await the result.
