HC Deb 30 March 1897 vol 48 cc119-20
MR. T. M. HEALY (Louth, N.)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in accordance with his pledge that any Irish savings will be credited to Ireland, the amount of the savings made by not filling up the existing vacancy in the Irish Judicial Bench will be paid to an Irish account; what was the amount of saving to the Treasury in Irish judicial retrenchments since 1875; and will such amount be also brought to a special Irish account for redistribution on Irish services?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

My statement was not retrospective, and referred to judicial and legal expenditure. I had in my mind the present vacancy on the Irish Bench, and possibly others. Legislation would be necessary, and my right hon. Friend the Chief Secretary for Ireland proposes to introduce a Bill on the subject.

MR. T. M. HEALY

Will the saving that is now going on from day to day be paid to the credit of an Irish account?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

I cannot answer that.
