HC Deb 30 March 1897 vol 48 c106
MR. J. P. FARRELL (Cavan, W.)

I beg to ask the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether in future the County Cavan Militia are to be sent for annual training purposes to County Donegal; on what grounds this change has been decided upon; whether he is aware that the men proposed to be so transferred are many of them labourers employed in the neighbourhood of Cavan, to whom the change will mean a loss of employment for the rest of the season after disbanding; and, whether the order can now be revoked?

MR. BRODRICK

The 4th battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers, will be trained this year at Ballyshannon, as there is no range near its headquarters where it can fire with safety, and also for the advantage of being brigaded with other Militia battalions. Its future place of training must depend on where a suitable range becomes available. It is not understood how training at Bally-shannon can interfere with the men's employment during the non-training period; and the present order could not be revoked without sacrificing the efficiency of the battalion.
