HC Deb 15 July 1897 vol 51 c172
MR. HENNIKER HEATON

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, whether he is aware that, time postage of letters from Buluwayo to England is sixpence on each letter; and whether he will make an effort to get the charge reduced?

MR. HANBURY

Yes, Sir; the Postmaster General is aware that a postage of sixpence the half-ounce is charged on letters from Buluwayo for this country; but he does not control the post office of Rhodesia, which not being a member of the Postal Union, is entitled to fix its own rates of postage without; and he cart only presume that the local circumstances do not at present admit of a lower rate than sixpence on letters for this country.
