HC Deb 15 July 1897 vol 51 cc177-8
MR. PHILIP STANHOPE (Burnley)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether, having regard to the importance of the issues involved, he will give an early day for the consideration of the Report of the Select Committee on British South Africa?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I do not think it is usual to give a day for the discussion of reports of Select Committees; nor, if I am to state my whole mind, do T think any useful public purpose would be served by a general Debate on the Report of the South Africa Committee. [Ministerial cheers and Opposition ironical laughter.]

MR. STANHOPE

In consequence of the reply of the right hon. Gentleman, beg to give notice that I will take other means, when the Report and evidence of the Committee are in our hands, to raise this question. ["Hear, hear!"]
