HC Deb 04 February 1897 vol 45 c1295
SIR ELLIS ASHMEAD-BARTLETT (Sheffield, Ecclesall)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the statement is correct that two Englishmen, named Edward Jessop and Thomas Body, were recently arrested and deported by the Boer authorities under the Aliens Expulsion Act, and treated with such harshness that one died and the other attempted suicide; and, if so, what steps Her Majesty's Government propose to take?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

I have seen a paragraph in the Cape Times, which is founded on one in the Natal Witness, making the statement referred to. I have telegraphed for information on the subject.
