HC Deb 02 February 1897 vol 45 cc1052-3
MR. DALY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state when he intends introducing the Bill to prevent the deportation of paupers from England and Scotland to Ireland.

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have again and again explained that any Bill which would provide a real remedy for the grievance complained of could not emanate from the Irish Office, as it would have to deal with the Poor Law as it now exists in England and Scotland. I am unable, therefore, to answer the question of the hon. Member.
