HC Deb 06 August 1897 vol 52 cc519-20
MR. MCCARTAN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1) whether his attention has been called to the resolutions of protest against the new Royal Commission on the working of the Irish Land Laws adopted at a large and influential meeting of farmers held at Ballymoney, county Antrim, a few days ago; (2) whether he is aware that the greatest dissatisfaction exists among the farmers of Ulster both as to the appointment of such a Commission at present and also the personnel of the Commission appointed; and (3) whether it is the intention to examine the lay and legal Sub-Commissioners whose appointments are permanent, or to confine the Sub-Commission witnesses to the temporarily appointed Sub-Commissioners only?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have received copies of resolutions passed at a meeting recently held at the place mentioned in first paragraph. I have no conclusive evidence that the fact is as suggested in the second paragraph, and as to the third paragraph, which concerns the procedure of the Royal Commission, the matter is one for the Commissioners themselves to determine.
