HC Deb 06 August 1897 vol 52 cc515-6
MR. HERBERT ROBERTS

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Agriculture whether he is aware of the difficulty experienced by a large number of farmers in Welsh-speaking districts in Wales through their having to obtain a translation of the forms and schedules sent to them by the Board of Agriculture relating to Agricultural Returns; and whether, having regard to the representations made, he will take steps to remove the inconvenience complained of by printing the forms for the districts referred to in the Welsh language?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (Mr. WALTER LONG,) Liverpool, West Derby

In accordance with my promise to the hon. Member when the Estimates for last year were under consideration, a detailed inquiry was instituted into this question, the result of which went clearly to show that no special difficulties have been encountered by the Revenue Officers in Wales in the collection of the Agricultural Returns. Indeed, the percentage of cases in which no Returns are made is smaller in Wales than in any other part of Great Britain. In those circumstances, I do not see my way to propose any change in the direction indicated by the hon. Member.
