HC Deb 05 August 1897 vol 52 c412
MR. C. J. MONK (Gloucester)

asked the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs whether he could inform the House that the Great Powers had come to any decision as to the amount of the indemnity to be paid by the Greek Government to Turkey, and, if so, whether he would state what the amount was?

MR. CURZON

I only got notice of the hon. Member's Question just now, but even if the hon. Member had been able to give longer notice I should have found it difficult to give a reply. It is true that the sum of the indemnity has been agreed upon by the Powers, but at the same time it constitutes only one item in the draft preliminaries of peace, which I do not think I should be justified in disclosing until the whole of the negotiations are concluded. I think the House will see the force of that. [Cheers.]
