HC Deb 12 April 1897 vol 48 c953
MR. FIELD

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether his attention has been directed to a Resolution passed unanimously at a public lecture in the Dublin Trades Council Hall, in which they deplore the evils arising from the instability of the par of exchange, and call upon the Government to carry out the House of Commons Resolution of 17th March 1896 by returning to the system of international bimetallism; and whether the Government intend to take any measures to promote an international conference upon the subject?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I am not aware that I can add anything to what I said in March of last Session, when I stated that I knew no circumstances which would induce me to suppose that anything would be gained by the initiative being taken in this matter by Her Majesty's Government.
