HC Deb 09 April 1897 vol 48 c843

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that Cromarty Firth is one of the safest places of anchorage for ships of war on the East Coast; and whether he will consider the advisability of fortifying the entrance to the Firth?

Cromarty Firth is not regarded as of sufficient importance, either as a base of naval operations or as a mercantile haven, to justify the erection of defensive works.
