HC Deb 19 May 1896 vol 40 cc1689-90
MR. CLANCY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, whether he has received a letter addressed to him by certain leading inhabitants of Blackrock, county Dublin, in reference to the works carried out under the Blackrock and Kingstown Drainage Act of 1893; and, if so, whether he intends to take any action in reference thereto?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have received the letter in question. It appears to me that if the defects disclosed in the letter are of a permanent and not of a temporary nature, the proper course to adopt would be to bring them before the Committee on the Bill now being promoted by the Drainage Board, who, no doubt, would give the matter due consideration.

MR. CLANCY

asked if the Government had power to intervene?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

said, he did not think the Government had any power to intervene in this case; from what he had heard about it he rather thought it would prove that the defects were only temporary.
