HC Deb 20 March 1896 vol 38 c1473
SIR ALBERT ROLLIT (Islington, S.)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, whether his consent to the appointment of a Select Committee on the subject of the current rate of wages clause in Government contracts was intended to be conditional or absolute; and, if the latter, will the Government itself move for the Committee, or afford facilities for the purpose, if the Motion of the hon. Member for Poplar should not, owing to the discussion on other business, be reached on Tuesday?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR,) Manchester, E.

My statement as regards the Committee was intended to be absolute and not conditional, and the Secretary to the War Office completed my statement in the Debate on the Army Estimates. If need be the Government will themselves move for a Committee; but they are of opinion that before it is appointed it will be desirable to have some Debate.
