HC Deb 17 March 1896 vol 38 cc1149-50
* SIR C. DILKE

I beg to ask the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs whether the Belgian posts in the district leased by Great Britain to the Congo State, but renounced by the Congo State under an arrangement with France, have been withdrawn; and, if so, what is the present position in that district; and whether, in the leased district retained by the Congo State, under the same arrangement, Wadelai and Duffileh are occupied by the Congo State?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. GEORGE CUBZON, Lancashire, Southport)

Her Majesty's Government have never been informed by the Congo State Government either of the establishment or withdrawal of any posts in the territory leased to the latter by the Agreement of 1894, and they have no trustworthy information as to the position in that district. It is certain, however, that neither Wadelai nor Duffileh are occupied by the Congo State.
