HC Deb 16 June 1896 vol 41 cc1159-60
MR. W. FIELD (Dublin, St. Patrick)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, from what fund are the pensions paid to the Irish lighthouse-keepers; and, what Departmental authority has control of the fund from which the Irish lighthouse-keepers receive their pensions?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

All the expenses of the Lighthouse Boards are defrayed out of the Mercantile Marine Fund. This includes the wages and pensions of lighthouse-keepers. The Board of Trade exercise the financial control over the Mercantile Marine Fund, conferred on them by the Merchant Shipping Act, 1854, and confirmed by the Act of 1894.
