HC Deb 03 July 1896 vol 42 cc666-7
MR. W. REDMOND

asked the Secretary for the Colonies a Question of which he had given him private notice—namely, whether there was any truth in the statement that appeared in the evening newspapers, that owing to advanced age Sir Hercules Robinson was not likely to return to the Cape?

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

I am obliged to the hon. Gentleman for putting the Question. I observed in the evening newspapers that the statement to which the hon. Gentleman refers is said to be made upon semi-official authority; but I wish to say that there is no authority for it—there is no foundation for the report. Sir Hercules Robinson has been very much indisposed since his arrival in this country; but I am informed that his state of health is improving, and that he expects to return to South Africa.
