HC Deb 18 February 1896 vol 37 cc541-2
MR. C. J. ENGLEDOW

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, whether, in view of the condition of the agricultural industry in Ireland and the financial position of the tenant-farmers, he will take such steps as are in his power to put a stop to all evictions for non-payment of rent pending the passing of the proposed Land Act, and thus prevent many tenant farmers in that country from being now deprived of any of the advantages that that Act may propose to grant to them?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. GERALD BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

No, Sir; the Executive has no power to do as the hon. Member suggests.
