HC Deb 18 February 1896 vol 37 c541
MR. C. J. ENGLEDOW (Kildare, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies, whether he is considering the necessity of making the same rule in Her Majesty's Colonies with regard to the taking of private practice by the Attorney General or Solicitor General of those Colonies as at present exists in this country; and, if not, whether he will do so at an early date?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

I only appoint law officers in Crown Colonies. There is much to be said in favour of restricting them from private practice, and in many cases this is the system pursued when the circumstances of the Colony are such as to justify the cost involved, but each case must be considered on its merits.
