HC Deb 18 February 1896 vol 37 cc554-5
MR. J. DALY (Monaghan, S.)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board, whether he is aware that men have been sent to Carrickmacross workhouse, to be maintained by the ratepayers of that district, after spending 30 to 50 years in England and Scotland; and, if so, what steps will he take to put a stop to this practice?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. HENERY CHAPLIX,) Lincolnshire, Sleaford

If the hon. Member will furnish me with the particulars of any recent cases of removals from England to the Carrickmacross workhouse under circumstances such as those to which he refers, and inform me of the names of the persons removed, the unions in England from which they were sent, and when they were so removed, I will make inquiry with regard to them. I am in communication with the authorities, both in Ireland and Scotland, upon the subject.
