HC Deb 14 August 1896 vol 44 cc831-2
MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in the event of the County Court Judgeship of Down becoming vacant, there is any intention of appointing to the office Mr. Walker Craig, formerly a Parliamentary candidate for the county, and at present the adopted Unionist candidate for the next Parliamentary vacancy; and if there is any such intention, why was Mr. Craig not continued as locum tenens at last Quarter Sessions?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I am not in a position to give an answer to this Question.

MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN

asked whether the right hon. Gentleman would give an assurance that he would not make the appointment?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I must decline to give an undertaking of that kind.
