HC Deb 14 August 1896 vol 44 c836
MR. HOGAN

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any definite results have yet been arrived at by the arbitration tribunal appointed to investigate the claims of the captain, owners, and crew of the Costa Rica Packet; and, what is the latest imformation on the subject in the possession of the Foreign Office?

MR. CURZON

The facts are as follows. The British case was presented on 17th November 1895. The Dutch counter case was presented on March 11th 1896. A further British memorandum in reply to the counter case was presented on July 11, 1896. The Netherlands Government applied for a month's extension of time in order to reply to the British menorandum. This was granted by the arbitrator—M. de Martens—on July 29, and the reply must thus be delivered by November 11. This is the latest information we have.
