§ MR. STEVENSONI beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whether he is able to give any further information with respect to the attitude of the Sultan and the Turkish Government in relation to the Governorship of Zeitun.
MR. CURZONwas understood to say that a telegram had been received from Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople stating that on the 19th inst., in reply to representations made by the Ambassadors of the Powers, the Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs put forward reasons against the appointment of a Christian Governor at Zeitun, but gave an assurance that the Grand Vizier was about to take measures which would be satisfactory to the Ambassadors. No further communication had been received, and it was supposed that the Ambassadors would shortly meet and consider what steps it was necessary to take in support of their representations.
