KEIR HARDIEI beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether he has given his sanction to the proposal made to him by a deputation from the Guardians of the Poor of the West Ham Union, which waited on him on 18th February with reference to an offer of the guardians to contribute a sum of £500 to a similar sum of £500 to be subscribed by the county borough of West Ham, and a like offer affecting the Leyton Urban District Council, the money so subscribed to be used on relief works for the unemployed?
§ MR. SHAW-LEFEVREA deputation of the Guardians of the Poor of West Ham was received by me with reference to the proposals mentioned. I informed them that I was advised that they were not legally empowered to make the contributions suggested, and that I had no power to authorise them to do so.
