HC Deb 16 February 1894 vol 21 c606
MR. CROSFIELD (Lincoln)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has seen the French official version of the recent collision between the British and foreign forces in the Samu country, as reported in The Daily Chronicle of 15th February, to the effect that the British police were engaged in requisitioning by force the inhabitants of a village belonging to France to construct roads; whether this is a true statement of the facts; and whether it is within the power of the Representatives of Great Britain to secure native labour in such a manner for such a purpose?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. S. BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

The whole matter is still under investigation, and I cannot, therefore, make any statement in regard to it.
