HC Deb 12 February 1894 vol 21 c278
MR. MOLLOY (King's Co., Birr)

On behalf of the hon. Member for Sunderland, I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether he can state how far the rumours are correct or otherwise that the Government of India intend levying a duty upon the importation of silver, whether in bars or coin, into India and Burmah?

*THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Mr. GEORGE RUSSELL, North Beds.)

My hon. Friend is no doubt aware that the proposals of the Government of India with regard to the taxation of the year are announced by the Finance Member of Council when he makes his annual statement; and he will, I am sure, understand that even if the financial policy of the year were already decided upon, it would be impossible for me to give any information which would have the effect of anticipating that statement.
